Given the same engine and r.p.m. what would be the difference in performance from a two blade propeller against a three blade?

2 and 3 blade props
by: Pete

Realistically speaking, not much. A 3 bladed prop can be slightly less efficient than a 2 bladed one but the actual difference that you would see in the air would not be very noticeable, if at all.
One of the biggest reasons people choose a 3 bladed prop over a 2 bladed one is to give a scale appearance where it is needed, or where ground clearance or engine to fuselage clearance on a multi-engine plane is an issue.
Another important factor is that of noise - 3 bladed propellers are generally quieter than 2.
