Fuel Life Expectancy

by Jon
(AZ)

I bought some Byron Fuel 10% Nitromethane, but this was about three years ago, do you know how long this lasts or if it is bad to use anymore in the plane?

Hi Jon, it largely depends on how the fuel has been stored but it's likely that its shelf life has expired over that time. Glow fuel can deteriorate if not kept in a properly sealed can because it absorbs moisture from the air, and UV light can also effect it over time.
If you see tiny droplets of water on the underside of the lid, or round the inside of the can at the top then it's likely that the fuel has gone bad. Also if the colour has darkened, that's another indication.
The only real way to test it is to try it in the engine; you won't do any damage with a small amount. If the engine is in good order and tuned but doesn't run well, try new fuel.
