HZ Super Cub First Flight er Crash

by Brian
(Mississippi)

Took my brand new HZ Super Cub out Christmas day. Had no experience but hearing how great the plane flew from different forums and watching first flight vidios I thought it would be a piece of cake.

The field was a well kept soccer field with and adjoining parking lot. The wind was too high but I didn't let that stop me (the wife told me so). First flight lasted about 20 seconds before crashing into the road. Luckily I cut the motor and wasn't too high up so there was minimal damage. Second flight lasted about 20 seconds before crashing into the grass. Seems if you turn too sharply you loose altitude. No damage this time. Third flight I tried to get some altitude, even did a loop accidentally, before crashing into the parking lot nose first. The motor is trashed and the fuselage broke in two places.

Lessons learned, listen to the wife when she says it is too windy. Buy a flight simulator and practice first. Get a smaller or slower plane. For a first timer, stick to the ugly glider type planes with the pusher prop for minimal damage and slower flights.

The wife's always right ;-)

Bad luck Brian, but I dare say you weren't the only one in the world to trash your nice new Christmas pressie! Flying a plane for the first time is never easy, even with a stable trainer like the SC.
My eBook covers it all! http://www.rc-airplane-world.com/beginners-guide-to-flying-rc-airplanes.html ;-)

Please don't get discouraged! One of the main tricks to RC is the left/right switch when the plane is coming toward you. I was taught this way: When the plane is coming toward you, push the stick toward the low wing to level it off again. That, the simulator, getting some experienced help and, yes, picking a slow, glider-type trainer will get you back in the air in no time.
Good luck!

Not Giving Up
by: BrianS

Haven't given up. A new 4 channel, brushless J3 Cub is on its way now. Plan to fix the Super Cub one day and give it another go.

Great - Another lesson is learning when NOT to fly. Too windy, or something just doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to take extra time or pack it up for another time.
