Wondering how long the batteries last and how far down range a RC electric plane can go before loosing its signal?

Depends Jeff on the quality and capacity of the cells, but generally speaking a fully charged set of NiMH's in the Tx should comfortably last for a day's flying - it's always a good idea to top them up before every flying session though. Systems on 2.4GHz are more efficient than MHz ones so the battery life is better.
As for range, if the cells are good then the radio signal should be such that you'll lose sight of the plane before the plane loses the signal. That's with a full range Rx of course, a micro Park Flyer receiver might have less of a range, but we're still talking a few hundred meters.
It's crucial that the cells are good, even if only one of them is low on voltage the range can drop drastically, and that usually results in a crash...
