RC plane gift for my son

by Wendy Jacobson
(Stowe, Vermont)

My son, who will be turning 12 in two weeks, has requested a remote control plane for his birthday gift. Can spend somewhere between $120 and $160. Would like to purchase everything for around that price but don't know what everything he will need. Also would like to have possibility of putting camera onboard for future filming. Thanks!

Hi Wendy - HobbyZone and ParkZone make some very suitable beginner planes and everything is included in the box if you buy the 'RTF' (Ready To Fly) version.
Ideally you want something of a high wing design ie the wing sits on top of the fuselage; these are the most stable and easiest to fly planes.
The HobbyZone Super Cub LP is very popular but is just outside of your budget. An alternative is the ParkZone J3 Cub costs slightly less and has equally stable flying characteristics. On a much smaller scale the Champ is popular but too small for doing any camera work!
As it is the other 2 I mentioned can take a camera but it would have to be a small lightweight one such as a keyfob spy camera available on eBay.
For more example of suitable planes, although most are out of the budget range, have a look at the page at http://www.rc-airplane-world.com/beginner-rc-airplanes.html.
