E-flite UMX Beast BNF
Update: since writing this page the UMX Beast BNF has been discontinued by E-flite.
The tops the tree of the recent influx of RTF and BNF ultra micro RC airplanes and is the first such plane to feature a brushless outrunner motor and 2S Li-Po pack as opposed to the tiny coreless motors and single Li-Po cells commonly used so far.
UMX stands for Ultra Micro Extreme and with a wingspan of just under 15 inches this Beast matches other Ultra Micros, notably from the ParkZone UM range, in terms of size yet seriously outperforms them in terms of power and maneuverability.
Accurately modeled on the full size Beast, which is proudly sponsored by Horizon Hobby themselves (manufacturers of E-flite products, amongst others), the E-flite UMX Beast is equally capable of performing smooth and precise aerobatics with ease. The 180 size brushless motor, 2S Li-Po pack and 5" x 2.75" propeller combination give this micro sized biplane unlimited vertical performance; the only drawback here is indeed its size - it's not long before the Beast is at a distance where orientation becomes an issue!
Functional carbon fiber wing rigging (bracing) and accurate scale decals complete the look of the UMX Beast, an Ultra Micro RC airplane that can also sit proudly on any desktop or mantle as a display piece.
Some of the electronic radio components used in the E-flite UMX Beast come from the successful range of Spektrum ultra micro components, namely the long throw AR6400LBL servos for elevator and rudder and long throw AS2000L servos for the ailerons, but the receiver/ESC has been designed especially to match the power demands for this particular plane.

While the price tag of the E-flite UMX Beast makes it the most expensive Ultra Micro to date, it's still good value and is set to be a huge seller. Intermediate and experienced RC pilots are going to be having a great deal of fun with this plane and let's hope Horizon Hobby can keep stock levels in line with demand and not get caught out as they have been so in the past with such high-demand models!
Here's Horizon Hobby's Jim Booker to talk more about the plane...
