Gas RC airplane engine size

If it says I need a 2C .46 or 4C .52 glow engine, what does this mean?

It means that the airplane can take either a .46 2 stroke engine or a .52 4 stroke engine. 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines are very different, and they are sometimes referred to as 2 cycle and 4 cycle, hence the 2C and 4C.
The numbers .46 and .52 refer to the engine capacity (displacement), stated in cubic inches. Quite often though, the decimal point will be dropped so the engines are just called a 46 and 52.
Because 2 stroke engines generate more power for their size, a higher displacement 4 stroke is needed to match the same power levels of the 2 stroke, when comparing engines for the same airplane.
