Needle valve setting

Depending on how broken in the engine is, I would start at about 2 1/2 turns out from being fully wound in (closed).
Unscrewing the needle valve more will make the mixture richer, screwing it in will lean out the mixture.

The 'pinch test' is a good way of checking the needle valve setting; with the engine running at high throttle quickly pinch the fuel line to the carb and note what happens to the engine RPM. Only pinch it for a second.

If the engine dies, or stutters badly, then the mixture is too lean and vice versa.
