Re: RC J-3 Cub for banner towing

Hi Mark,
I've not done it myself but have seen it done at my club in the past. The Cub is about as good a plane as can be for banner towing; nice stable flying at slower speeds.
You need to watch the stall speed; the drag of the banner significantly increases the stall speed, so you'll need to fly at higher throttle settings and probably have a slightly nose-up attitude to increase the angle of attack slightly.
Keep the turns as gentle as you can, again to prevent a stall. The stall speed increases in a turn anyway, and the banner amplifies this even more.
As for take off - lay the banner out in front of the plane and let the Cub run over it, that way the Cub's acceleration on take off won't be effected as much as trying to pull the banner from a standing start. That's how I saw it done anyway!

Thank You

Thanks for the information. Makes me more excited in wanting to get my plane done. Have just purchased a .61 motor to put on it. Thank you also for the web site and all the information in it.

Banner towing.

Sounds like a liability nightmare to me. I'd give it second or third thoughts.

Airplane Banners
by: geniusatlarge

I am also looking into banner advertising along the coast in Florida. I am just starting my research to see if it can be done or not. What size banner can be flown? It has to be big enough to see it from the ground. Can a plane pull something that big? Also, can you do water launches and landings?

RC or real?
by: Pete

Hi Geniusatlarge - it sounds like you're referring to full size banner advertising when you say "along the coast", is that the case? This page is actually about banner advertising with a radio control plane - just to clarify ;-)

Sounds fine, just be careful

An electric airplane is okay for light banners made of tissue paper or similar...anything more and you need a brushless motor or a nitro engine. Get a larger battery/tank too - you want to stay up ling enough so people will see your ad!
