This completely depends on the size of airplane, and the type of flying you want to do. For example, a micro electric plane like a ParkZone Ember can be flown in a very small area, such as a back yard or school hall, whereas a larger gas plane needs much more space such as a football field.

It also depends on the skill of the pilot. I watched with envy as a guy flew a plane inside a tennis court!
