Sizing Propellers To My RC Airplane

by Jason
(Pearland, TX)

I have flown trainers for some time and am about to jump into the world of scale rc's. I have never been versed in the art of sizing a propeller to the airplane - I am going to buy the CMP Cessna 182 ARF Skylane, engine size is 46-50, 2950-3100 gram weight.
I am thinking of going with a 4 stroke engine and I'd rather have power to spare. Can anyone recommend a prop and what do I need to consider when sizing?

Prop size

Hi Jason, I'd say definitely go with a 4 stroke... 2 stroke engines in scale airplanes just don't sound right!
As for prop sizes, this might help - http://www.top-flite.com/accys/topq5000a.html

It should give you an idea of where to start, but you'll probably find yourself trying different size props anyway, depending on what size engine you end up with.

I'd say to use a lower pitch prop (eg an 11x7 rather than an 11x10) because you don't need high speed with a scale Cessna, I think torque is more important.
