Walkera Dragonfly 4 motor upgrade

I've been flying a Walkera Dragonfly 4 for a few months - I'd like to say thank you for your DF4 pages, they've really helped me out. My question is, if I upgrade my battery pack to a lipo one, do I have to upgrade to a brushless motor, do they go hand in hand? Sorry for my ignorance!

Brushless not necessary
by: Pete

Hey Scott, the answer is 'no'! Lipo battery packs and brushless motors are the best combination for power and flight duration, but lipos work with brushed motors without problem.
I've upgraded my DF4 to a lipo pack, and I've changed the motor to a Slo-Max Team Orion Avionics 300 brushed motor. Big difference in performance and flight times!
It's no secret that the stock motors of the DF4 and similar helicopters aren't fantastic, so upgrading to a better brushed motor is a sensible thing to do ;-)

Walkera DF4 Motor Upgrade
by: Ben W

Hi there Pete,

I am also a DF4 owner which I love - mine is fairly standard at the moment apart from a Li-Po upgrade, thanks for that section by the way, very helpful!
I have burnt out my tail motor I think and have found a replacement on ebay fairly cheap, but am also thinking of upgrading the main motor. I can't find the one listed in your comments - do you know of any on ebay that are compatible with the DF4, and also can you upgrade the tail motor or is standard fine? And what do you think of the metal upgrade kits available?

Thanks in advance!

Walkera DF#4 Modifications ....

While we can all agree that the stock motor isn't that great, the key to better flight is either getting a better motor with more torque or using a higher voltage battery.
I currently use an 11.1v 1000MAh 10c Li-Po battery. Many have had their Rx's MOSFET Circuit blow up, the reason is because they are using the wrong pinion and motor. The only motor that will work is the E-Flite 370 w/11t pinion .5mm. This motor will not cause your MOSFET to blow. However, fuses for the main motor and tail motor should still be installed as crashes will happen. Once you have the motor, replace the power leads with the old stock motor power leads, then just install the motor and the Li-Po battery.
That's cheaper than paying up to twice as much for an Xtreme motor.
